| Abstract | During the first stage of the project, theoretical and experimental investigation of dynamic and wave phenomena in sea straits was performed. The work was based on satellite remote sensing data obtained by synthetic aperture radars (SAR) on board Envisat and ERS-2 satellites, sensors
AVHRR NOAA and MODIS Terra/Aqua in optical and infrared ranges. La Perouse, Kerch and Lombok Straits were chosen as test sites.
For a number of test cases, dynamic and kinematic characteristics (divergence, vorticity, shear and deformation) of water mass were determined for La Perouse Strait (Soja) and adjacent area. Joint analysis of SAR data from ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites and in-situ measurements of current speed and direction give reasons for a hypothesis of tidal origin of the cold water belt in the region of the Rock of Danger.
Activity has begun on investigation of dynamic processes in Kerch strait based on remote sensing data. Estimates are made of the impact wind and fresh water balance of the Sea of Azov have on these processes. Interpretation and validation of remote sensing data was tuned during subsatellite measurements conducted on the site of South Division of the Institute of Oceanology and in the region of Tuzla Spit (RFBR grant 06-05-79098).
A novel investigation of generation and propagation of internal waves in the Lombok Strait and adjacent area was undertaken. Parameters of non-linear internal waves were computed. Internal waves generated in the sill area of the Lombok Strait propagate in three different patterns: southward only, northward only, and in both directions.
The exiting collection of aerial and satellite radar images of sea surface and supplementary information has been amended with data from the test strait areas. The collection is built and maintained as a web site by participants of the project. |
