| Abstract | In accordance with science plans under RFBR projects 06-05-65177 and 06-05-64600, in September and October 2006, experimental studies were conducted on the site of South Division of the Institute of Oceanology in the region of the town of Ghelendzhik and Tuzla Spit. For the period, a set of satellite images of the test areas were ordered and obtained under European Space Agency project AOBE.2775 (PI O.Lavrova). The images were taken by a synthetic aperture radar mounted on board Envisat satellite. During the experiments, measurements of main hydrometeorological and oceanographic parameters were undertaken concurrently with satellite data takes. Such measurements are necessary for adequate interpreting satellite images and retrieving geophysical information related to water dynamics studies in the Kerch Strait.
The focus was on the investigation of small-scale current patterns in the coastal zone. The work was carried out jointly with our colleagues from the Institute of Applied Physics RAS with the help of an ADCP instrument and free floats level with water surface. Small scale anti-cyclonic vortices resulting from the Black Sea Rim Current meandering were detected. They were also revealed in radar images. Current speed and direction measurements were made in the Kerch Strait near Tuzla Spit. Those measurements confirmed mostly wind-driven character of water circulation in the Kerch Strait.
Experimental work was aimed at a feasibility study of employing microwave methods for the detection of gaseous bubbles at the sea surface. The work was carried out using a coherent two-polarization scatterometer and a 4-polarization radiometer. Output amplitude contrasts at vertical and horizontal polarizations were determined depending on the flow rate of gas producing bubbles, wind speed and surface waves. Preliminary analysis of the obtained results has demonstrated the possibility to use coherent scatterometers and polarization radiometers to
reliably detect on the sea surface gaseous bubbles from an underwater source with low emission rate. |
