| Abstract | In-situ database toolbox for short-term dispersion model validation in macro-tidal seas.
Hydrodynamic models simulating dispersion of soluble substances in the marine environment require appropriate field data in order to demonstrate their representativeness. This project presents the collection of physical and soluble tracer data intended specifically for this kind of validation.
The intensity of currents and complexity of topography and of tides in the Cap de La Hague area make it one of the most difficult to represent from the points of view of hydrodynamics and dispersion. The AREVA-NC plant carries out controlled releases of tritium, in the form of HTO, in the area, providing an ideal tracer for short- and long-term tracking of dispersion. 14 493 measurements were acquired during seven cruises to track dispersion in the hours and days following a release. These data, completed by physical measurements, make it possible to test dispersion models with precision, from the hour following release to a period of several years. Dispersion characteristics are shown and model-measurement comparison methods proposed.
All of the physical and tracer data are available. This tool for validation of models in macro-tidal seas is intended to be an open and evolving resource; it could constitute a benchmark for dispersion model validation. |
