| Abstract | The Cilician Basin / Çukurova Contınental Shelf coastal system is a region experiencing rapid industrial growth and population explosion, and one that is significantly affected by natural and anthropogenic changes; yet it embodies important national resources and complex air – sea – land interactions. A sharp contrast exists between the coastal area supplied by land-based nutrient sources and the nutrient limited open sea. In this environment, coastal / open sea interactions determine the changes in the coastal ecosystem, including eutrophication processes. In addition to coastal sources, interaction with the atmosphere plays an important role in these processes. Research supported by observing and coastal forecasting systems, and supplemented by evaluations of past data, is expected to document the present state, variability and long term changes of the system in great detail, establısh forecastıng tools and in this way help establish the information basis of sustainable environmental management and of action plans for an important coastal system. |
