| Abstract | Dredging of the excess sediment accumulated in time at locations like ports, harbors, marinas and river mouths might be required. Uncontrolled dumping of these dredged materials might create contamination based on the assumption that this material is somehow polluted with the human activity related to the location. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation which is the only national legislation for the management of the dredge material for our country is simply inadequate since it does not include any criteria for the limits of contamination, properties of the dumping and monitoring of the dumping region . It is clear that the EIA legislation is neither suitable nor enough for the management of the dredge materials considering the significant increase in the port and marina activities lately. Therefore there is a need for the determination of according to which criteria and methods the dredge material (sediment) from the coastal regions will be managed and disposed (disposed over land, or dumping in the sea) based on the scientific facts. The aim of the proposed study is to remedy the pointed deficiencies and provide Ministry of Environment and Forestery in the preparation of the “National Framework” with the required information and data, considering the criteria used by EU. Data and quantitative information required for this process to move forward smoothly will be obtained from the literature (scientific publications, technical reports) and new monitoring and analysis (sediment toxicity) studies will be performed at the potential dredge locations. The existing and new data for our coastal waters will be evaluated in conjunction with the EU legislation to determine the criteria for the disposal/dumping of the dredge material. Using tools and applications like three-dimensional hydrodynamic models with sediment transport (in pilot areas) and geographical information systems (GIS) suitable locations for the dumping in the sea and disposal over land will be determined. In addition, potential impacts created by dumping and the monitoring strategies for the dumping regions will be formed. Recycling and beneficial utilization applications will be used for the sustainable management of dredge material. An ecosystem based management procedure (decision tree) will be formed and applied to pilot regions with different marine activities in order to provide the sustainable management of the dredge materials.
