| Abstract | IMPACT tackles the challenge of managing marine protected areas (MPAs) in close proximity to ports. The goal is to define transnational and sustainable management plans for the protection of MPAs while allowing the development of ports. IMPACT will build a dedicated geographic information system (GIS), available on the web, whose information will be organised into datasets relating to: a) transport of marine currents between ports and MPAs, based on oceanographic measurements from coastal radars and drifters; b) ecological retention properties of the MPAs, obtained with ecological surveys and numeric models; c) distribution of contaminants based on historical data and dedicated measurements. It will produce maps with semaphoric indicators to estimate, over time, the vulnerability of various zones within the MPAs to the pressure due to the ports nearby. This approach is based on a modelling and innovative monitoring plan that capitalises on and expands the existing network of cross-border infrastructures built in the MOMAR and SICOMAR projects. The WebGIS platform will be the shared interoperable tool for the management of MPAs by governing authorities and responsible for Maritime Spatial Planning. Furthermore, the project will provide indispensable support to the authorities responsible for implementing the Marine Strategy Framework Directory: the partners Regione Toscana, ISPRA (Italy) and IFREMER (France) have been directly involved in this process. The partnership includes 4 regions: Tuscany, Liguria, Corsica and PACA; this methodology will be tested in 4 MPAs in the immediate vicinity of the ports of Livorno, La Spezia, Bastia and Toulon. |
