| Abstract | The overall objective of the project is to better understand the relationship between the primary production mechanism and physical dynamics of the Black Sea through field measurements, data analysis and modelling studies. In this context, the direct effects via surface currents and indirect effects via coastal front systems of riverine input on primary production in Turkish coastal areas of the Black Sea will be investigated and regionally compared. The effect of the physical mechanism resulting from the coastal circulation system and related unstable frontal structures on the upward transport and consequent re-entry to ecosystem cycles of nutrient salts below the euphotic layer will be investigated.
The project will last for three years. Proposed field work consists of two research cruises to be conducted in the same year (end of winter and end of summer) over the coastal zone from İğneada to Batumi. The surface chlorophyll concentration and the distribution of medium-scale discharge-gyre-front systems will be determined by evaluating real-time satellite data and will be used for the exact timing of research cruises as well as to apply operational changes in the predetermined station network. Secondly, past and current satellite data including changes in chlorophyll concentrations and water level will be extensively studied to investigate interrelationships between primary production and the front system, relationships between medium-scale cycles and changes, and the resulting variability in these relationships. Third, these studies will be supported by modeling studies and be placed into a quantitative framework.
At the end of the project, it will be possible to associate primary production with general factors such as physical dynamics, climate change, eutrophication and pressure of upper trophic levels. Moreover, the role of primary production in the determination of sustainable fisheries capacity along the Black Sea coasts will be quantitatively determined and interpreted more objectively. The scientific results obtained for the Black Sea ecosystem have the potential to contribute to the methodological/theoretical/conceptual solution of problems in similar marginal marine ecosystems.
