| Project title | Deep-sea metal and nutrient cycling in the Marmara and the Black Sea: Improving the detection of redox processes and nanoparticle formation |
| Project acronym | DEEPREDOX |
| Project reference | 119C027 |
| Begin date | 2020-06-01 |
| End date | 2022-05-31 |
| Description | |
| Abstract | DEEPREDOX
will focus on doing an extensive exploration of Black Sea and Marmara water
column and sediment redox gradients, to particularly improve the detection of
iron redox cycling and nanoparticle formation. The proposed work will generate
an extensive, unique and new biogeochemical dataset and develop first
applications of an emerging nanoparticle detection method - single particle
ICP-MS, in METU-IMS laboratories. Further, the in situ electrochemical
detection of iron speciation will be advanced using a novel, purpose-built
submersible voltammetric analyzer. These novel results will be evaluated in the
context of a broad biogeochemical parameter set including nutrients and carbon,
hence the links to ecosystem-level processes will be demonstrated with a new
biogeochemical model. The results to be generated in DEEPREDOX will improve the
feasibility of ERC MARINER proposal and allow to show crucial preliminary data
and further refine the work plan in the ERC Consolidator Grant calls in 2021
and 2022.
