| Abstract |
The overall objective of DOORS is to
make operational the SRIA for the Black Sea, support the successful
implementation of Blue Growth and contribute to a healthy, productive and
resilient Black Sea.
The DOORS ambition is a game-changing
approach to the challenges of the Black Sea. It will build on current
capacities within the Black Sea region, with the support of the best expertise
in Europe, will adopt for the first time an entire system (river mouth-coast-
deep sea) approach in the Black Sea, and will introduce new knowledge and tools
to address ecological, societal challenges and enhance economic development. It
will engage with Black Sea stakeholders from the outset of the project and
realise new opportunities.
The DOORS Research and Innovation Action
will develop an optimised open research support system for the Black Sea to:
(1) address human and climate change impacts on its fragile and damaged
ecosystems and (2) support real behavioural change across its complex
geopolitical and governance landscape for Blue Growth development. In doing so,
DOORS will provide the ambitious framework to overcome the barriers to the
advancement of the Blue Growth agenda. DOORS will bring together existing
fragmented monitoring efforts, deliver state-of-the art observation capability,
engage stakeholders through participatory approaches and establish a harmonized
capacity-building framework. These outcomes will maximise the benefits to all
Black Sea communities to promote business growth, well-informed stakeholders and
educated citizens.
DOORS has 4 specific objectives:
Objective 1: Create a harmonised set of
methodologies for data acquisition for a coordinated regional approach.
Objective 2: Integrate interdisciplinary
scientific knowledge, in order to address the impacts of human-induced
activities and climate change, as input needed to effectively implement
policies in the Black Sea.
Objective 3: Realise ecosystem services and Blue
Growth sectors' potential and provide support for entrepreneurship.
Objective 4: Bring the Black Sea Environment
closer to society.
To fulfil this and address these four specific
objectives, DOORS will embed stakeholders' collaboration at its core to develop
three Programmes: System of Systems (SoS), Blue Growth Accelerator (BGA),
Knowledge Transfer and Training (KTT).
DOORS' ambition is to:
- create the System of Systems, a One-Stop-Shop
for Black Sea stakeholders for better decisions, and optimise use
of existing harmonised data and address data gaps through the development
of assessment frameworks that are in line with best practices for marine
monitoring management and decision-making;
- strengthen the Black Sea scientific community through new and impactful collaborations, and
bridge the gap between science and policy in the Black Sea to support the
implementation of commonly/widely applicable legislation;
- create the Blue Growth Accelerator, a ground-breaking approach that currently
does not exist in the Black Sea basin, the activities of which will be
developed considering the particular needs of the local/national
communities and provide a series of opportunities based on the ecosystem
services approach to support the development of Black Sea (potential)
entrepreneurs; and
- engage stakeholders through participation,
communication, dissemination and training activities to raise awareness, build capacity, foster a
stronger Black Sea identity across the region and with its citizens, and
greatly increase marine related literacy within the region.
