| Project title | Assessment of the ecological status of the sea based on the content of heavy metals and microplastics in sediment and fish in the coastal sea of Montenegro |

| Description | |
| Abstract | This project examined the content of heavy metals and microplastics in sediment and economically significant fish species at ten locations along the Montenegrin coast over two years. Heavy metals were analyzed using advanced spectrometric techniques, including AAS and ICP-OES. For the first time in this region, microplastics were identified and quantified in surface sediments and selected fish species, applying a unique methodology to ensure reliable results. The project aimed to assess the biogeochemical cycle of heavy metals, their impact on sediment quality, and the health of fish as a key food source. Special attention was given to understanding contamination levels and the risks posed to the marine ecosystem. The results contribute to improved monitoring and management of heavy metal and microplastic contamination in coastal areas.
