| Location | |
| Geographic coverage | North Atlantic |
| Description | |
| Abstract | The main goal of CANIGO is to understand the functioning of the marine system in the Canary-Azores-Gibraltar region of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean and its links with the Alboran Sea through comprehensive interdisciplinary basin scale studies. CANIGO is part of the MAST-III Regional Seas Research and involves partners form 12 countries and 45 institutions.
There are four general scientific objectives:
i.To obtain an improved knowledge of physical processes controlling the gyre and the related mesoscale circulation through observations and nested circulation models. The information on the physical environment in the region will be an important basis for the studies of biogeochemical cycles and of carbon and particle flux.
ii.To study the carbon global cycle in the pelagic system in nutrient limited (oligotrophic) and nutrient-rich (productive) waters and to estimate the carbon flow through and from the pelagic system to deep waters.
iii.To determine, quantitatively, the influence of coastal upwelling and Saharan dust on the magnitude and composition of particle flux in the Canary region, and to investigate how this influence changed through the last glacial and interglacial period.
iv.To quantify, understand and model the water mass exchange system through the Strait of Gibraltar, the processes of formation, evolution and fate of the Mediterranean Outflow, including the associated submesoscale eddies, and to measure the biogeochemical fluxes (in terms of carbon, nitrogen, trace metals and metalloids) accompanying these water exchanges. |
