| Description | |
| Abstract | The specific objectives of the Project were (1) to predict the ecosystem variability of the Black Sea through process studies and development of interdisciplinary models that will allow: prediction of the future states of the sea, descriptions of the present and the past states of the sea and displaying trends and changes and (2) to develop further the NATO Black Sea Data Base and Management System in accordance to the operational oceanographic requirements.
The opening activity of the Project was to set up a strategy for the 'process oriented' studies in order to describe the physical and biochemical processes, to explain and understand the mechanisms involved, and to determine the time and space dependent predictability of the system, and to accumulate quantitative understanding of the interactions between small-, meso- and large-scale physical and ecosystem processes. Field studies were organized with the Turkish and Russian research vessels, which were later, extended to R/V Knorr, a USA vessel.
Another important activity of the Project was the development of a Database Management system having a Special DBMS 'OceanBase' with a Web interface to provide effective data management and data exchange with ecosystem models in near real time and/or real time. In conjunction with these activities, the previously set up Black Sea Database has been loaded with new interdisciplinary data from regional and international sources and it contains over than seven million quality controlled data from 28500 stations for the entire Black Sea covering period 1954-2002. A Web interface to the database has been developed and there is an Online Internet access to the historical Black Sea Database on the ODBMS Project Web Site (http://sfp1.ims.metu.edu.tr/odbmsdb).
The regional capacity building through the Project is remarkable. Over than 70 young scientists from six Black Sea countries were trained by utilizing the regional and external competence. Regional capacity building extends to up grading the available technical facilities of the riparian countries and purchase of high tech new instruments in order to improved the technical capacity of the collaborating institutions.
Now a model for the 'Interdisciplinary Studies Integrating the Black Sea Biogeochemistry and Circulation Dynamics' is available. Utilizing this model an overview of the processes responsible from the unique 'suboxic zone' of the Black Sea has been compiled.
Dissemination of the Project activities and Project products was among the important activities. Over than 125 scientists were involved in the Project and the scientific achievements of the ODBMS Project are disseminated in publications, presentations at the international conferences and workshops, books and collected articles, electronic publications, and CD's providing extensive information of the Project. A Web link has been set up for the distribution of the historical Black Sea data to the scientific community. |
