| Abstract | Aim : To study the benthic communities within an undisturbed area (S. Evoikos Gulf) and an area disturbed by trawling activities (Petalion Gulf), prior to experimental trawling. By monitoring the benthic communities for 6 months in addition to, the fish polulations, it is expected to draw conclusions on the actual impact of trawling on the benthic ecosystem. Objective : The main objectives of this study are: 1. To provide information on the actual community structure (fish and bottom fauna) in a previously untrawled well defined area in addition to an area subjected to normal trawling activities. 2. On looking at the different benthic species of the trawl catch that constitute the epibenthic components and by monitoring the bottom fauna, it is possible to estimate the recovery rates of selected species and of the ecosystem as a whole. 3. By monitoring the fish composition, prior to trawling and 6 months after intensive trawling, the study will investigate the reaction of fish to the possible degredation of the seabed. 4. To compare the recovery rates of the benthic fauna and fish in two neighbouring areas with similar fishing grounds at similar depths, thus drawing conclusions on the long term effects of bottom trawling on benthic communities. |
