| Abstract | Aim: The monitoring of physical, biological, geological and chemical parameters of the Aegean and Ionian Sea. Objective: The monitoring of coastal waters including sediments and biota concerns two categories of parameters. Category I Parameters: (1) total mercury concentration in organisms and sediments, (2) organic mercury in organisms, (3) cadmium in organisms and sediments, (4) high molecular weight halogenated hydrocarbons in organisms and sediments, (5) fecal coliforms in recreational waters and bivalves. Category II parameters: (1) basic oceanographic and meteorological parameters (e.g. salinity, oxygen, temperature, chlorophyll, wind), (2) floating tar balls and tar balls on beaches, (3) total arsenic in organisms, (4) radionuclides in organisms, (5) pathogenic micro-organisms, (6) polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in organisms |
