| Abstract | SEISCAN was a MAST III funded project to rescue early seismic reflection profiles, that exist only as paper records, computer scanning and archiving to a CD-ROM database of image files. Between 1997 and 2000 over 8000 images covering 1,000,000 line kilometres were scanned and returned to owners free of charge.
These would cost 23,000,000 Euros to re-survey at current costs.
SEISCANEX received new funding from the EC Framework 5 Programme to extend the activities of the successful seismic scanning archive facility. In addition to keeping the cost-free scanning activity open, the project widened the geographic regions of opportunity to include EC Newly Associated (NAS) States and those members of the EC Mediterranean Partnership. The project also scanned data acquired outside EC waters. Therefore existing upgraded scanning stations continued and also a mobile scanning capability was introduced to enable in-situ operations that avoid transit of valuable old seismic records. The principal scanning centres in Barcelona and Strasbourg have been augmented with new scanning facilities in Trieste (OGS) and Athens (NOA- mobile).
