| Abstract | PRISMA is an interdisciplinary project, founded by the Italian Ministry of the University and Scientific Research and Technology to get a deeper knowledge on environmental problems affecting the Adriatic Sea. Four seasonal cruises were carried out in the Adriatic during 1995 and 1996 to study the longitudinal transport along four main transects (in the Northern Adriatic, in the Central Adriatic, in the Southern Adriatic and in the Otranto Strait) as well as sediment-water interactions and biogeochemical cycles. Ship mounted ADCP complemented the above observation. The synoptic shipboard measurements included CTD casts, as well as water sampling for the determination of nutrients and of dissolved and particulate elements. An ecological model has been developed to describe organic C and nutrients cycling, as affected by the Po river input. |
