| Description | |
| Abstract | The MATSIS project focuses on the development of new techniques to facilitate comprehensive assessments of trophic status in the Irish Sea. Through the examination of physical, chemical and biological parameters, it will contribute to our understanding of the driving forces of and controls on water quality. Water quality, with repsect to excessive anthropogenic inputs of nutrients, is intimately related to primary productivity, and the development of eutrophication and nuisance/toxic blooms, potentially leading to changes in the food chain and ecosystem unsustainability. Primary productivity and its controlling factors are therefore key ecological quality indices that can be used by regulatory bodies for monitoring and assessing water quality. The project has two main objectives: 1. Develop, evaluate and implement new techniques suitable for end-user assessment of primary productivity and its controls. 2. Use these new techniques, along with supporting parameters, in parts of the Irish Sea that are exposed to varying amounts of human impacts and differing environmental conditions to make an assessment of trophic status. |
