| Abstract | MarLIN is an initiative of the Marine Biological Association of the UK (MBA). The MBA was established in 1884 with the major aims of promoting scientific research into all aspects of life in the sea and disseminating to the public the knowledge gained. MarLIN commenced in 1998 and is a new approach to sharing information on marine wildlife and its sensitivity to human activities and natural events. The programme is funded by the major holders of marine biological data around Britain and Ireland and organisations with responsibility for marine enviromental protection and management. MarLIN has three core aims: 1. To provide a structure for linking available data on marine life around Britain and Ireland 2. To improve access, display and interpretation of information in support of environmental management, protection and education 3. To be the most comprehansive and easily used source of information about marine habitats, communities and species around Britain and Ireland and their sensitivity to natural events and human impacts MarLIN will provide network acess to marine life data and use that information for a wide range of users including coastal zone managers, scientists, school children and the general public. |
